How do I view graphic files in Newsgroups?
This is a good question and the steps below will help you not only
with associating graphics files but any other files that you might want to view on your
computer.
Step
#1. |
You first will need to get a helper application that can run
along side your newsreader. We recommend LView it is very fast and supports
most all the image formats that you could encounter in the various newsgroups. When you
download and install something such as LView
it should properly associate itself with all the graphic images it supports, if it doesn't
associate correctly or you would like to associate something else with image files go to Step #2, otherwise you are ready to view images in
the newsgroups. |
Step
#2. |
Let's say you would like to use another program that you
already have and associate it with a graphic file. As an example let's associate
Microsoft's Internet Explorer with GIF images, you could of course associate any program
you want with a GIF image but for our example we will use Internet Explorer. Note:
A browser such as Internet Explorer isn't the best choice for loading up images
as they are not as quick as having a dedicated graphic viewer is. But, the following steps
are more as a guide for associating a program of your choice with graphic files. |
Step
#3. |
To associate a graphic file with an application, there is a
pretty easy way to do this, Go to your start menu and load up Windows Explorer, the file
manager, and find one of you GIF files that you are wanting to view. Note: If
you cannot find where you have a GIF file on the start menu select "Find" then
"Files or Folders" in the box after "Named:" type in "GIF"
then push the button "Find Now". This will show you where they are located. |
Step
#4. |
Now double click on the GIF file, that should open up a
window named "Open With", there should be a line that reads "Description of
'.gif' files:" you can type in a short little description of the file here this is
what will appear in the description field in Windows Explorer. For our example I will type
in "Graphics Image File". |
Step
#5. |
The next line down should read "Choose the program you
want to use:", look in the list for "iexplore" (this is Internet Explorer)
or whatever other program you want to associate with this file and click once on
it. Note: If your program isn't on the list don't despair you can still
use the button named "Other..." Click on this and it will open up a window that
will allow you to browse for the file you want to associate with the file. |
Step
#6. |
Make sure the "Always use this program to open this
file" box is checked. Then hit "OK". There you go now you have associated
your file successfully with the program. Check to be sure everything worked, switch to
Windows Explorer and double click on the GIF file as you did before. Now, the program you
specified should display the GIF image. |
